Ketamine/Xylazine Anaesthesia

Xylazine/Ketamine is a suitable alternative to Somnotol for surgical procedures such as gonadectomies, which can be completed in 20 minutes.

Ketamine is available as Ketalean (100mg/ml). Xylazine is availble as Rompum (20mg/ml).

The suggested dose according to MUN Animal care is 90 mg/kg Ketamine and 10 mg/Kg Xylazine administered in a single IP injection. The sex of the rat was not specified, so this dose is taken to be appropriate for both male and female rats.

We generally use a lower dose for female rats (and have also used this lower dose successfully in young males). We use 70 mg/Kg ketamine and 7 mg/Kg Xylazine combined in a single IP injection. The following table provides injection volumes calculated on the basis that the initial concentrations of the ketalean and Rompum solutions are 100mg/ml and 20 mg/ml respectively.
