AVERTIN RECIPE

• 5.0 gm tribomoethanol (TBE)
• 20 ml 95% Ethanol
• 5 ml tert-amyl alcohol
• 0.9 % (W/V) saline to final volume 250 ml
• Dissolve 5 g TBE in 20 ml Et-OH. Gentle heat may be necessary to dissolve TBE ( water bath < 50° C.)
• Add 5 ml tert-amyl alcohol
• Add enough saline to bring volume to 250 ml.

STORE IN REFRIGERATOR.

Dosage for rats : 1 ml / 100 g body weight.

Supplements of 1/4 the initial dose are usual, although larger supplemental dosages may be required.

Important Precautions:

Avertin is an irritant, especially when used at high doses or repeatedly. Adhesions are sometimes seen in the abdominal cavity after IP injections. Tribromoethanal degrades inthe presence of heat and/or light and can become toxic. Exercise the following precautions.

• Prepare Avertin using Sterile Water.

• Protect Avertin from heat and light. Store Avertin in a dark or covered bottle in the refrigerator.

• Do not use Avertin that is more than 2 weeks old.

• pH below 5 indicates that the Tribromoethanol has degraded.
